TAKE LOTS OF PICTURES
If you disassembled something take pictures so you know how it goes together. Taking pictures also helps if the there is damage to item in the transportation.
TAKE THE TIME TO GO THROUGH YOUR BELONGINGS
Look at everything critically and decide whether you need to keep it or if you can give away or donate. It will help you speed up both the packing and unpacking and could save you money in taxes.
GET FREE BOXES
Moving boxes are expensive! Grocery or convenience stores have boxes that they are happy to give away, just ask.
USE BLANKETS, PILLOWS AND CLOTHES INSTEAD OF BUBBLE WRAP
You can wrap fragile items in clothes, pillows or blankets, it will save you a fortune in bubble wrap.
NUMBER ALL YOUR BOXES
Number your boxes and so you know if one is missing. Also, on a separate piece of paper write down the main items in that box.
USE COLORS ON BOXES
Assigning a color to a box will be useful for your helpers or the movers. Label the room the same color as the boxes that go into it.
TRANSPORT THE CRITICAL THINGS YOURSELF
If you can, take the critical items yourself, this includes important documents.
BE KIND TO YOUR MOVERS
Moving can be tough, be kind and provide water and snacks to your movers.
KEEP CLOTHES HANGING
While your clothes are on hangers, group by four or five and use a garbage bag to protect and hold them together. Insert clothes from the bottom up, then tie the top around the hangers.
